This is How Meteorologists Predict the Weather

In ancient times, many cultures would look to sages or oracles to try to predict the weather. And historical records show that sometimes these people would be fairly accurate with their predictions. We know now, of course, that this is because they were perceptive enough to notice small changes in the atmosphere and the world around them.

Today we have a lot more distractions around us and are a lot less in tune with the world. So we still turn to certain people to predict the weather. But rather than working off estimates, these people have scientific data and technology to back up their claims. Meteorologists make a living by studying and analyzing the weather of our planet. They look at how the environment is changing and being affected by natural and human-made changes. But how exactly do they predict the weather each day?

Tools of the Trade

Modern technology is incredibly complex and unbelievably powerful. We can scan microscopic atoms or look out into the depths of space. Meteorologists make use of this fantastic technology to predict the weather. The main piece of kit at their disposal is satellites.

Hanging peacefully in orbit around our planet, there are a number of satellites that can detect small changes in the atmosphere that are imperceptible to us. They also provide live visual images of the world from above, allowing meteorologists to look at cloud formations.

They also use specialized radiometers to detect changes in the vibrations in the air and ground to see what weather patterns are forming or approaching. But the most impressive aspect of all this is the use of supercomputers. All the data produced by these tools is baffling. No human could sift through it. So supercomputers are used to process the reams of data into an understandable format that can be translated into a weather report.

Accuracy

The data provided by the supercomputers isn’t as simple as saying exactly what is going to happen. Science isn’t advance enough yet to fully predict what is happening in the atmosphere or with weather patterns. The job of a meteorologist is mainly to examine the finished data and interpret it to predict the weather as accurately as possible.

Of course, this explains why you can find a lot of accurate sites like snow day finder that can often pinpoint exact changes in the weather, and why you also get a lot of inaccurate weather prediction. It all comes down to the skills and knowledge of the meteorologists working there and the data they have available to them.

Meteorologists can only predict so much with the data they are given, particularly if that data is incomplete or based on faulty readings. And more often than not your average news station does not have the same technology that the met office has. This is why you get the common trope of weathermen always being wrong.

Wonder of Science

We rag on the weather stations for being inaccurate at times, but we have to take a step back and properly admire just how far we have come as a species. Gone are the days of looking to the sky and guessing what tomorrow holds. We can now look deep into the fabric of reality and make educated predictions. And who knows where we will be tomorrow. Soon we may be able to control the weather as well as predict it. But, of course, only time will tell.

Should You Start A Degree in Engineering in 2021?

The majority of students begin their degree when they’re only 18 years old, this means they have to decide prior to this what subject to study. This is one of the most important decisions to make throughout your whole life and is tricky to decide your future at such a young age. To participate in a degree is an extremely expensive decision so it’s vital you consider all course options before you apply.

Your degree will set you up for your future career and always be a factor in whether you get hired in any future jobs, if you choose the wrong subject it’s not possible to get funding to do another course, this would have to be self-funded so it’s important to make the right choice first time. Engineering is labeled as one of the most difficult degrees to undertake due to its heavy mathematics and computer science content.

We think there’s much more to engineering than just this, we think it’s also a very creative course, whether you have ideas for walk in showers, cars, or skyscrapers you’ll have the ability and opportunity to turn your ideas into reality. We think Engineering is a great degree choice, keep reading to hear about all the best parts.

Course Content

Engineering degrees cover a massive amount of content, considerably higher than many other degrees available. Each university will offer a wide range of topics to study, but as they will all be different from each other, it’s really important when applying to check what modules are offered to make sure the course content suits your interests most closely. As engineering is a complex subject, there is usually a specific requirement for entry onto this course, this is not the case for all universities, but many will require you to have achieved a high grade in both mathematics and physics. While any content you need to know will be taught to you, having a strong background in these subjects will ensure you don’t fall behind once you start your degree.

Future Career

To become an engineer there are many paths, but future employers definitely prefer to hire people who have completed a degree in engineering. Having a degree in the subject will really make your application stand out and give you an advantage over other candidates when you apply for jobs.  If you finish your 3 years of undergraduate and decide you love the subject so much it hasn’t been enough you can continue studying at Masters and Ph.D. level, this would, in turn, make getting a job much easier. Engineering is a difficult job so it’s important that you’re passionate about it, if you are then engineering is known to be one of the most rewarding career paths you can set out on.

Courses Available

Most universities offer an engineering course as it is an important and popular degree. Some of the best universities in America offer it including – Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, and California Institute of Technology. These are some of the best-ranked universities in the world, future employers would be delighted to fill a position with anyone with these places as their academic background. If these universities don’t appeal to you then you’ll be glad to know due to the importance of engineering the majority of universities will offer an engineering undergraduate degree giving you the freedom to decide where you want to live. If you want to stay in your home state you’ll be able to or if you want to move away, you’ll have so many options and can move to the state of your choice.
