Virtual Tour - LeBontemps Room
Bontemps edited and co-edited seven anthologies and collections that reflected his enduring interest in African American Literature. These anthologies have become basic tools for public schools, colleges, universities, and libraries. With Langston Hughes, Bontemps edited Great Slave Narratives (1969) and The Harlem Renaissance Remembered (1972). The anthology, The Harlem Renaissance Remembered (1972), was edited when Bontemps had retired from Fisk University as chief Librarian and during his stint as a visiting professor at Yale University where he began to teach, write, and meditate about the glorious and inglorious years of the Harlem Renaissance. Bontemps also collaborated in 1945 with Jack Conroy on They Seek A City, later revised, expanded and re-titled, Anyplace But Here (1966). His other historical works include Story of the Negro (1948, 1966) and 100 Years of Negro Freedom (1961), both of which were histories suitable for adults and young readers as well.
